Tips for Choosing the Best Hair Color for YOUR Skin Tone

Tips for choosing the right hair color for your skin tone

Not sure how to choose a hair color that is right for your skin tone? First thing to find out is what is you skin tone type. Are you a warm or cool? Is your skin fair, medium or dark? Most of us can figure out if we're fair, medium or dark complected just by looking in the mirror, but when it comes to warm or cool that can be more difficult to determine.

When determining your skin tone type, ask yourself how does your skin tan. Do you burn easily or do you tan easily. If you burn easily then chances are you are a cool. Whereas if you tan easily, then you are probably warm. Regardless of your skin tone make sure you use a good sunscreen while your in the sun.

You also want to take a good look at your eye color. If your eye's have a lot of gold specs that is an indication of warm, if you have a lot of blues and greens then chances are you will fall into the cool category.

You can also do the 'wrist test'. Flip your wrist over and look at the veins. What color are they? If you see pinks, red, blues, and/or green then your probably cool. Warmer tones will have green or yellow tones. If your veins are the same color as your skin then you fall into the rare neutral category.

When we choose hair colors to compliment our complexion we want to choose colors that are opposite of our skin tone. If you fall into the warm category then you'll want your hair color to be cooler and same thing if you fall into the cool category, you'll want your hair color to be warm. Neutral categories are the lucky ones, the look good in everything.

Now, that we figured out skin tones, let's check out some of the different hair colors to compliment those tones.
Cool Blondes
Shade include: Platinum, Ice, Silver Ash, Sand Beige and Champagne
These beautiful cool blondes are best for porcelain skin types and skin types that have reddish undertones. The icy hues neutralize red tones. Ashy blonde works well on skin types blue gray eyes. The go to product for this type is Kevin Murphy's Blonde Angel Wash and . This lavender-infused, color enhancing shampoo takes on all tones – from creamy to platinum and with the help of added optical brighteners, rescues dull color- taking it from drab back to fab.

Warm Blondes
Shades include: Gold, Caramel, Amber, Honey and Butterscotch

These warm tones can be worn by either fair or warm skin tones.  Fair skin with cool undertones look best when paired with warm toned hair such as strawberry blondes, coppers, honey and gold.  These colors also tend to work well for people with olive skin tones.  People that have warmer skin tone should  choose cooler shades of blonde and avoid any colors that are yellow.  Joico's Blonde Life shampoo and conditioner are perfect for this color blonde.  Blonde Life will leave your hair smooth and silky and keeps your blonde hair bright.

Cool Red
Shades include: True Red, Dark Auburn and Burgundy
Red is actually very flattering for those people with red undertones.  When red hair is paired with pale skin that has red undertones,   the skin will actually appear to glow.  For those that have a warm, peachy complexion skin color, cooler auburn's will make your skin pop.  If your skin is olive color, be careful about going red, it can give your skin a green contrast.  Joico's  Red Infused Shampoo and Conditioner will keep your red shiny and vibrant.
Warm Red
Shades include: Strawberry Blonde, Copper and Amber
Copper is one of those shades that everyone can wear.  Lighter skin tones like copper for the stunning contrast it provides with their skin.  Olive and darker skin tones love this shade because it picks up the warm undertones of their skin color. The best way to maintain this color is with Joico's Copper Infused Shampoo and Conditioner.  This copper infused shampoo and conditioner instantly refreshes those copper tones and highlights.
Warm Black
Shades include: Dark Mocha, Brown and Black

For darker skin tones that have cool black tones in their hair, try adding some chocolaty dimension to your hair color.  This is a flattering way to add some warmth to your skin. However if your skin tone is fairer and cooler, you'll want to opt for a shade that is in a warmer range.  Kevin Murphy Hydrate Me Wash and Rinse is perfect for this hair type and will infuse the hair with moisture and gloss.

Fashion Colors
Shades include:  Whatever color you want

When it comes to deeper skin tones and fashion colors you can let your imagination run wild, but keep in mind these tips:
  • Darker skin tends to look washed out when paired with paler shades - stick with saturated hues to enhance deeper skin tones
  • Tanned skin is great for more vibrate tones. Try jewel tones like ruby, fuchsia or magenta
One of the most important things to keep in mind about fashion hair color is that it does fade quickly.  The cooler the water the longer your shade will last.  Be sure to use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner like Joico Defy Damage.  Defy Damage will help protect your color while strengthening you hair.

Which ever color you decide is best for you, just remember to have fun with it.  As long as your hair is in great shape and you take care of it, you can always "play" with color.  Be sure your colorist is licensed and certified and keeps the health of your hair in mind.
