How To Winterize Your Hair Written by Mona Lazer

The cold winter weather has made it to our part of the state!  How is your hair dealing with these cold snaps and warm ups?  During the winter our hair needs are different then they are during the summer.  We expose our hair to more heat, which increases static electricity in our hair.  Lack of moisture during the Winter is a problem also.  Not having enough moisture in the hair can  cause it to become  brittle.  This, of course, contributes to breakage and fly-aways.   If your hair is chemically treated, this can be especially concerning to you.  Another problem we have with our hair during the winter is a lack of volume.
When discussing winter maintenance I always take into consideration the type of hair we're working with.  What works for someone with thick coarse hair is NOT going to work for that fine/thin/haired client and vice versa.  Making sure you have the right product for your hair type is key to success.  That being said here are the top 5 ways to keep your hair in top condition this Winter.

Winterize your hair with Joico's K-Pak Hair Treatment System.  We start with a clarifying shampoo to remove any minerals, impurities, or product build up.  Once that is rinsed the next step is to apply Joico K-Pak cuticle sealer.  This will smooth and tighten the cuticle while restoring the hair to it's natural ph of 4.5 to 5.5.  We then apply the Deep Penetrating Reconstructor.   By rebuilding the hair's structure from the inside out, K-Pak re-energizes stressed, damaged, and chemically treated hair.   The last and final step is the Joico K-Pak Intense Hydrator.  This step replenishes moisture and lipids to overly dry, damaged hair, rendering it manageable, soft, shiny and hydrated. The Intense Hydrator seals the hair cuticles and improves hair elasticity.

Protect your hair while you sleep.  Use a satin pillow case or loosely pull your hair up.  That protects the hair from being roughed up while you toss and turn
3
While you're out and about  this Winter, be sure to protect the ends of your hair from rough collars that come with heavy jackets!
4
Use a Dry Shampoo like Joico's Instant Refresh to cut down on the amount of shampooing and blow drying during the Winter months.  Using less heat well not only keep your hair healthier but as an added bonus it helps to save your color treated hair from fading as quickly.
5
Check your at home routine to see if you may need to switch you shampoos and conditioners.   You may find that you need more moisturizing shampoo  or one that will increase the volume of your hair.

Follow these simple steps and  your hair will make it through the Winter Blues with no problems.
